ACADEMY IS IN SESSION

Published:

Academy Events continue their monthly series of shows supporting new artists at O2 Academy2 Islington, London on 13 November.  This month ‘The November Session’ features four alternative flourishing rock bands from throughout the country.

At a time when we’re overrun with playlists, music platforms, and ‘you might like’ recommendations, it can be hard to find your new favourite band amongst all the noise. The Academy Events promoters have selected the most exciting up-and-coming bands across a range of genres, carefully curating the best new artists on their radar. “Showcasing the brightest up-and-coming bands is really important to us, so we’re creating these monthly nights to really push emerging artists into the spotlight” says Academy Events’ promoter Joe Davies.

Strange Cases have just released their debut album Pop Therapy which showcases their frenetic, snotty, psyche-surf rock ‘n’ roll sound in the vein of The Cramps or Ty Segall with elements of Krautrock and post punk.

They are joined by Stoke-on-Trent five-piece Psyence who mix up psych rock, rock n roll and electronica with soaring melodies and huge guitar riffs. Birmingham garage punk trio The Cosmics, fronted by Erin Curran, deliver energetic performances and fuzzy punk tunes whilst Ciel aka Michelle Hindriks bring a full band together to bring you a mix of moody Americana with a new-punk sheen.

About ‘The November Session’ Artists:

 Strange Cases

The band describe themselves as The Beach Boys without the beach” whereas Clash Magazine said “Brighton’s Strange Cages are one of the country’s most vivid live acts, a group whose psychotic take on rock ‘n’ roll turns the narrow streets of Brighton into desert hallucinogenics.” As well as Clash they have received support from Fred Perry Subculture, Q Magazine, The 405 and The Line of Best Fit and have teared up stages supporting King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Night Beats, and Boogarins.

“Strange Cages possess a primality which suggests a pungent diet of psych garage fuzz: from The Stooges to The Seeds, these guys metabolise their influences with bold panache, creating a fevered serge of sweaty hedonist rock” – Hero Magazine

Psyence

Psyence released their self-titled debut album in August 2019. It’s a 10-track opus shaped by years of hard touring up and down the UK and in Europe, channelled into a release that traverses psych rock, rock n roll and electronica, with soaring melodies and huge guitar riffs.

Developing a fearsome reputation for their incendiary live shows, Psyence have become regular performers at the Shiiine On Festivals and have appeared at Kendall Calling and Festival No 6 amongst others recently, as well as supporting Saint Agnes and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

The Cosmics

Quietly building a following with a spate of releases, the band combine guitarist Conor Boyle’s Ramones-riddled riffery, twin brother Danny’s relentless punk skuzz drumming with the crystalline, vintage voice of vocalist/bassist Erin Curran.

They have played Glastonbury Festival’s BBC Introducing Stage, making their first TV appearance on the BBC. Other major festivals they have played include Reading Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Truck Festival, Y Not Festival and Kendal Calling, as well as being tipped by renowned club night This Feeling. They have received national radio plays on BBC Radio 1 (Huw Stephens), Radio X and BBC Radio 6 (Steve Lamacq) and supported Goat Girl and Starcrawler.

Ciel

Ciel is the moniker of Dutch dreamgaze artist Michelle Hindriks. Moving from the small town in the Netherlands where she used to live for the vibrant musical scene in Brighton. She then released her debut EP ‘Anxiety’ in 2017 which “takes you on a shoegazey trip dominated by the guitar lines of her Jaguar and dreamscape vocals, with dark tribal beats cascading the backing rhythm.”  She has played festivals such as Eurosonic, Le Guess Who and SPOT festival in Denmark.
