THE BEST OF 2016: ANDY’S ALBUMS (PART 1 FROM 11-20)

Published:

Counting down from 20-11 of the best albums of the year

First the rules:

For this year I decided to only include albums that I’d reviewed on the site. I reviewed 273 of them, so there was plenty to choose from.

What this meant is there are some cool things that haven’t made the cut, like the new Metallica one.

These 20 have – and  this is part one. From 11-20 (Blues Pills at 11 and so on)

BLUES PILLS – LADY IN GOLD (2016)

What I said: “Lady In Gold” has seen them hone their craft, polish a few things up and sound so good they might just be making a bid for genuine stardom.”

BONNEVILLES – ARROW PIERCE MY HEART (2016)

What I said: “”Arrow Pierce My Heart” is a brilliant record, one that is surprisingly diverse, and whilst it might never be described as “suitable for children’s parties”, the soundtrack to your next sleepless night with your own darkest secrets running through your head never sounded better.”

STEVIE NIMMO – SKY WON’T FALL (2016)

What I said: “Sky Won’t Fall” is one of those records. One that will appeal to – and be loved by – everyone. Not just one of the best blues records of 2016, it’ will end up being one of 2016’s best records.

IMPERIAL STATE ELECTRIC – ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT (2016)

What I said:  “All Through The Night” feels real good. Damn near perfect in fact.

MONSTER TRUCK – SITTIN’ HEAVY (2016)

What I said: “We live in a world where even Lemmy wasn’t immortal. This means anything can happen and all bets are off. Allowing for that, you’d have to think that as rock n roll has survived decades just fine…. it might be just fine thank you. Rock n Roll doesn’t need saving. It does need Monster Truck. And you need “Sittin’ Heavy”.

ROBIN TROWER – WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO? (2016)

What I said:” “Where Are You Going To” is an absolute triumph from start to finish. The sound of Robin Trower stretching himself and reaching deep inside to find something magnificent. It is hands down his best record in a very, very long time.”

SARI SCHOOR AND THE ENGINE ROOM – FORCE OF NATURE (2016)

What I said:  “Sari Schoor And The Engine Room will… content themselves with the thought they have just made one of the blues records of the year. Indeed, never has an album been better named.”

BAD TOUCH – TRUTH BE TOLD (2016)

What I said: “Bad Touch have made the record you hoped they would. One that is a match for their brilliant live shows. The Special Guests are now special themselves, and will no doubt be headliners soon.”

THE VIRGINMARYS – DIVIDES

What I said: ““Divides” is the sound of a group of three men who want to be something. It is the record of a group of three men who deserve to make it where they want to go.”

THE KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS – ON SAFARI (2016)

What I said: “The simple fact about “On Safari” , is that the four men who made it could only make this record, they wouldn’t even want to sound like anything else, and they are brilliant at it.
