Featured Band: Despot

Following last weeks single release news, heres some more on  the Brazilian one man band. Just don’t call them a one man band. Ooops.

Formed in 2008 by sole member Marcelo Murrer, Despot is a Black Metal band from the infamous city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, homeland of Metal legends Sepultura, Sarcofago, Mutilator and many others. Marcelo’s curriculum includes the extreme and deranged bands Necrocult and Unholy Massacre (1998-2001).

Though the one-man-band shtick has been overplayed and the moniker is understandably associated with juvenile and musically inept bands, Despot’s aggressive music is surprisingly accomplished and mature. Mixing a wide variety of influences from the precursors of Death and Black Metal with a modern and eclectic mindset, the music takes the listeners to an imaginary place in space and time where the evolution of Metal took a different turn. Despot is definitely influenced by the old, cobweb-covered sounds of the seminal Black and Death Metal bands but it abhors tradition – the idea is to re-imagine, re-create what defines those genres, not to repeat what’s already been done.
