MIDLANDS METAL CRUSADE: At Dawn We Attack @Slade Rooms, Wolverhampton 31/5/15

Band number two At Dawn We Attack offer a scorched earth policy

Huey Lewis’ “Hip To Be Square” let’s be honest, is about as out of place at the Midlands Metal Crusade as a One Direction tribute band. Nonetheless, At Dawn We Attack March on, bold as brass to that very tune. Frontman Bryan Hancox is clearly ready for the show too, taking to the stage in a pretty fetching mask.

With that, they are down to business – and Huey Lewis covers are conspicuous by their absence – eschewed in favour of some hardcore tinged metal with huge breakdowns. There is more than a touch of Converge here in a brutal set. Bryan goes for a little walk around the Slade Rooms at one point, while “Nooses” seemingly has murderous intentions – as well as a riff that you could hang your coat on.They end as they came on. With something unexpected as Alexisonfire’ “This Could Be Anywhere In The World” is given a Black Country hardcore twist. At Dawn We Attack have clearly got their battle plan mapped out, and it seems to involve a viscous blitzkrieg.
