MV EXCLUSIVES: kariti – ‘Il Corvo’

Published:

‘Covered Mirrors’ is the debut of карити (kariti) – (‘mourn the dead’ in church Slavonic, an antique Slavic liturgical language) – a Russian-born artist based in Italy, and represents a cathartic peregrination through bereavement.

Years of exploring the most diverse genres of music and literature, and, in particular, the work of such musicians as Scott Kelly, Dorthia Cottrell, Dax Riggs, Steve Von Till, Townes Van Zandt, Nick Drake and Nate Hall inspired k. to finally write music for many poems piled up over the years and record ‘Covered Mirrors’ in summer of 2019.

This record will likely please the ears of those who enjoy the music of Chelsea Wolfe, Marissa Nadler, Emma Ruth Rundle and A.A. Williams, among other dark/noir folk artists. It was recorded and mixed on an old secluded countryside property by Lorenzo Della Rovere, (acoustic guitar on ‘The Baptism of a Witch’, slide guitar on ‘Sky Burial’) and mastered by Lorenzo Stecconi (Ufomammut, Zu, Grime).

The record features a contribution from Marco (Grime) who plays electric guitar on ‘Sky Burial’ and ‘Anna: Requiem do Death’. Music for ‘The Baptism of a Witch’ is inspired by an antique Russian folk song about reincarnation ‘Razlilas rechka bystraya’. Lyrics for ‘Anna’ are based on a loose translation of Anna Akhmatova’s poem ‘Requiem: to Death’. All songs are written, performed and produced by k. Intro features a mix of traditional Russian funeral singing.
