Damian checks out the new EP from Kent’s hotly tipped alt-rockers

The Alchemy is an Alternative rock quartet from the historic Cathedral city of Canterbury, Kent formed in 2015. The band comprises Rhys Taylor- Vocals and Guitar, Luke Welch- Lead Guitar, Alex Porro- Bass and Sam Ewen- Drums

Modern Age is the guys debut EP and contains four tracks and was produced by I Am Giant man Paul Matthews, a band with whom they share some sonic similarities.

The opening song “Save Me From Myself” is an expansive slice of harmonic melodic rock. We get thumping pounding drums, great guitar riffs, some great vocal harmonies and a real catchy chorus that will have you singing the song well after its ended…

The title track “Modern Age” is a heavier more mid tempo rock out that you can really let yourself go to.

The opening guitar licks are a joy to behold and the song expands into an excellent slice of melodic hard rock.

The penultimate track ”Blackhole Passenger” is a more expansive offering, a real accomplished  grandiose anthemic arena rock aria.

“Heartstrings” closes out this release and is almost a love song, where it seems the relationship has moved to distrust. A wonderfully energising, uplifting composition.

Canterbury has been the birth of many a prog rock band so it is heartening to find a new band that can fly the flag for a new breed of rock from this great city.

This is a marvellous EP that shows a band with a maturity beyond their years. These are some glorious tunes with some heartfelt lyrics, delivered by gifted accomplished musicians.I can’t wait to get to see these guys in a live setting and hear them share these mantras.

An Alchemist aims to purify, mature and perfect certain objects. This band are already there.
