Review: Broken Witt Rebels  – Georgia Pine EP (2016)

Published:

Proud Brummie Damian is blown away by a band from his hometown

A young, new Blues rock band from Birmingham WTF? Yeah, it’s true. This quartet comprising Danny Core (vocals, Rhythm guitar), Luke Davis (Bass guitar), James Tranter (Lead guitar) and James Dudley (Drums) are certainly “Ones to watch.”

The Georgia Pine EP is the follow up to their previous submission Howlin`

First up is “Low” and what an introduction! Blistering guitars, pounding drums, thumping bass and Danny’s pained almost pleading, crying vocals. A real belter of a song which will have you humming, mumbling the chorus for hours after.

“Suzie” and the title track “Georgia Pine” follow and underline the real strength of this band. These boys are the tightest unit I have listened to in a long, long while. Sizzling guitars, throbbing bass, pulsating drums and what a voice, dear me. I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven.

Getaway Man is a heartfelt love song, real soulful blues highlighting the wonderful richness of Danny’s vocal range. A song that is not just a ballad, but a real anthem. A song where you can imagine an audience illuminating an arena, holding up their lighters and mobile phones.

The final track “Guns” is a real up tempo, let’s give `em hell tune and rounds off this superb five piece offering. Lyrics include “Burn bright like a cigarette” and this track certainly does.

A cracker of an EP. I found it hard to believe that this band weren’t from Birmingham Alabama at times sounding like Caleb Followill (Kings of Leon) fronting Blackberry Smoke or The Black Crowes.

Saying that take nothing away from these guys, this is all their own style.

They will be out and about supporting this release so make sure you make the effort to attend. I guarantee you’ll be saying “I was there” in a year or two.

Their website has almost a mission statement saying “We’re not looking to make up the numbers, we’ve come to DESTROY.”

These fellas certainly annihilated me!!!
