Review: Dirty Freud – “Love In The Backwater EP” (2020)

Published:

There`s so much music out there to listen to and not enough time to allow you to listen to it but with this pandemic I’ve had a lot more time than usual. I`ve always enjoyed a diverse taste in music and to me, if it sounds good who cares what genre or bracket it falls into. Therefore, when I was passed a link to Dirty Freud`s latest EP “Love In The Backwater” after a quick listen I was enthralled. Dirty Freud is an electronic live and recording artist from London but has found success since moving to the North of England. His music contains elements of dubstep, 2-step garage, bassline, reggae and has been coined Electrodub. Indeed, he has been dubbed the unrulily prince of Electronica and the bastard son of Electro bass music.

This extended play opens with `Blood Bayou` with some eerie whistling before a rolling backbeat allows Ruby Tingle`s vocals to ride atop in an almost middle eastern vibe. This quite haunting track is written about bitter break ups. The artist has said “This is talking about how love is never clean and is often messy with casualties. Yet it can be full of interesting things as a Bayou swamp can be…”

Manchester-based electronic producer and singer-songwriter Szou guests on the quite soulful `Intentions` and adds her wonderfully dreamy vocals to a rolling beat which has some synth swathes along the way. A number about taking a carpe diem attitude to life, in other words to make the most of the present time, enjoy life while you can.

Title track `Love In The Backwater` was written about surviving a pandemic, walking a tightrope of lockdown claustrophobia and the exhilaration of club escapism. I felt there was a delightfully hypnotic feeling about this track with a variety of subtle electronic nuances throughout and a feeling of almost euphoria. Ruby Tingle`s vocals had a nearly operatic texture at times.

This release closes with `Moments` which examines the enduring effect of split-second choices we make. “In life it only takes a moment or choice to decide how things go. And in life moments shape us as people good or bad” says Dirty Freud of the track. There was a much harder edge and tone that really expressed a balance musically. It quite subtlety related that point at which the life choice you decide is going to turn out positive or negative.

I have to admit that electronica is not a genre of music that i`m familiar with but there was so much to enjoy with Dirty Freud and the tracks that make up his `Love In The Backwater` EP. The addition of Szou and long-standing collaborator and creative talent Ruby Tingle is a touch of genius.

Let Dirty Freud help you find love in your own backwater.
