REVIEW: Märvel – THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2017)

Published:

The most rock n roll ballad ever?

All you need to know about this, the second release from Linköping, Sweden’s trio Marvel, is contained in the last of its songs.

“Bring It On” is the only ballad here and is as sunny and blissed out as a man on a hammock with tomorrow off, but its first two lines are these: “bring it on, motherfuckers, I can handle your shit”.

And when your slow one is that rock n roll you’d best believe that the rest of it rules.

From the opening strains of opener “Back In The Saddle” it is absolutely clear that The King, Speedo, and The Vicar (probably not their real names) – who formed the band while on an exchange visit to Colorado USA – did so after listening to a lot of Kiss records. Specifically, the early Kiss records too, because largely this rocks along like six outtakes from “Destroyer”.

“One Shining Moment” is youthful hedonism inside three and a half minutes, the title track is so happy to be alive it contains whistling and doesn’t sound shit, and you have to concede that is quite the feat.

The absolute stonewall highlight of this, though is the quite brilliant “Goodbye, Shalom”, and those who pine for the return of The Hellacopters will be in love with this at first listen.

There is even a cover of W.A.S.P’s “LOVE Machine” that they manage to make sound like a Swedish Garage rocker worthy of Backyard Babies. That’s one reason to love them. There are five others.

A record that is as much fun to listen to as it sounds like it was to make, this is pretty, well, Marvel-ous (come on, you didn’t think we weren’t gonna say that did you?)
