REVIEW: SCOUT KILLERS – DECEPTION (2017)

Published:

From the west country but aiming for the world – and Andy gets a chance to diss Alter Bridge

Scout Killers might be based in the lovely town of Bath, but the five piece, Scott Cox on vocals, Tom Graham-Hibbs on bass, Chris Phillips pounding the drums, and Julien Morrez and Beau Stevens handling the guitars, clearly have ideas way beyond that.

There are only four tracks here, but each one is filled with the kind of hook that people assume that Alter Bridge possess, until they actually listen and discover AB are the dullest band on the planet that is.

Scout Killers, thankfully are way more exciting, “Freak Show” takes about 15 seconds to revel in its stadium bothering ambitions, “Keep Telling Me” calls out a cheating girlfriend, but kicks in with the type of alt rock fury that prime Funeral For A Friend managed way back when (but with clean vocals, which is a good thing).

“Let It All Go” makes you wonder how they can sound so huge on what must have been a shoestring budget and the anti-ballad “You Have It All” is a particularly strident closer. If Bon Jovi sang “This Ain’t A Love Song” back in 2005, then this really isn’t. It is superb, however.

Only four songs, so you hesitate to make all kinds of wild pronouncements, but its hard not to go overboard in the face of an EP this polished.

Scout Killers have just got their “made a great record” badge.
