STARTING GUNN

Published:

Now back from their 18 date UK headline tour and from supporting Palace in Europe, MarthaGunn release their new single ‘Heaven’The band also announce their next UK headline tour for 2020, culminating at Courtyard Theatre in London.

After their 2019 headline tour ended at a sold-out London’s Sebright Arms, this single comes as a captivating climax to the year for MarthaGunn’Heaven’, produced by Catherine Marks (Foals, Wolf Alice, Amazons), nurtures the soulful and unmistakable vocals of front-woman Abi Woodman, in a song which is a rowdy highlight of their live set. ‘Heaven’ tells a story about the fear of change and sacrificing comfort for something possibly better. In Abi’s own words:
“I am not comfortable being comfortable. I always want more. Sometimes I don’t know whether to accept the beauty of simplicity or to self-sabotage to find something greater. When I wrote ‘Heaven’ I was playing out a fantasy in my head and exploring a path I could only dream of taking. A few years on and I have stopped living in fantasies. I go after everything my soul desires. Heaven is a song for anyone dreaming of something more.”

Going on to talk about honesty in her lyrics Abi says: “When I was growing up, I wasn’t exposed to any female artists that really spoke to me.  I guess that’s where I found my voice in the lack of someone saying it for me. I love artists like Carly Simon and Christine McVie who say things so explicitly, but I didn’t have someone to look up to that was of my generation. It feels great to now be making music amongst a generation of women who say it exactly how it is.”

MarthaGunn consists of five best friends – Abi, Max, Humphrey, Ally and Frankie. They take inspiration from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Mystery Jets and Haim, and over the course of 2019 have been sharpening their live show. They travelled the length and breadth of the UK on their first ever headline tour, were hand-picked by Steven Knight to play Peaky Blinder’s Festival, and made appearances at the likes of The Great EscapeBushstock, and Citadel Festival. The band have also garnered support from John Kennedy at Radio X and performed at his X-Posure Live event this summer alongside Mystery Jets.
