Hallmarked with Kane’s typically impassioned vocals and lucid lyrical staging, the track also guest-features a blistering guitar solo by Boz Boorer, along with violin from Fiona Brice. It is the first single to emerge from a forthcoming new album: ‘Book of Broken Things’ to be released imminently.

At the same time, a coruscating account of a debauched evening, a self-satire and a more externally focused satire of the view that designates fatal addictive illnesses as approved occupational hazards for the prancing minstrels who destroy themselves for our entertainment, “8 Stone, Tall and Handsome” locates the narrator in Hackney’s thriving night-time economy of the late 90s. Clearly Bukowski-esque, owing a substantial debt to ‘Tender Prey’ era Nick Cave, but also referencing Dr. John, Joris Karl Huysmans and Bill Hicks, the narrator lands up “in a room the texture of a yellow lung with a ten pound prostitute” and catching his “reflection in the broken glass” of “a pocket mirror lying on the mantelpiece” he declares himself to be “ridiculously handsome” as the woman present “spits in a cup”. The denouement reveals the awesome depths of the narrator’s self delusion.

It comes from Kane’s forthcoming fourth album. His first solo album after splitting from North London gutter rockers, Avalanche, ‘Songs for Swinging Lovers’ was described as displaying “novelistic range and ambition” in Uncut and had him as a “Scotch obsessed Al Green” on Rollingstone.com; his more recent ‘Flowers and Ledges’, which featured Mark Eitzel on backing vocals, was lauded for Kane’s “aching tender tones” and his “bleakly literate lyricism” in Mojo.

Alongside performances from Boz Boorer and Fiona Brice, ‘Book of Broken Things‘ features notable appearances from Ed HarcourtSteve Jansen (Japan), Liam McKaheySharleen Hector and Emma Pollock. Produced by James Night over the space of three years, it has already been described as “Imagine if Scott Walker had ‘gone weird’ while still delivering great tunes” by Chris Roberts in his art rock column in Prog magazine.

New album: ‘Book of Broken Things’, will be released digitally from 5th March 2021, via the Corrupt label.

Lead single, “8 Stone, Tall & Handsome” is out on all streaming platforms from today (26th Feb).
